Shelby C. Kinkead, Jr.Shelby practices in the areas of commercial and business litigation, mineral (coal and gas) acquisitions, complex real estate transactions and litigation, timber rights/conveyance and disputes and personal injury and insurance defense litigation. Shelby has tried over 100 cases resulting in a number of reported decisions and successful verdicts.
Shelby was a Staff Member of the Kentucky Law Journal. Following his graduation, Shelby clerked for Honorable Mac Swinford, United States District Court Judge for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky. In 1975 he was asked by Chief Judge Bernard T. Moynahan, Jr. to organize the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Kentucky. Since 1977, he has been in private practice.
In 1995, Shelby was a participant in the Legal Education Conclave sponsored by the Kentucky Bar Association. He served as a trustee of the Kentucky IOLTA Fund from 1996-1999. From 1998 through 2004 he was a member of the Board of Governors of the Kentucky Bar Association. During his tenure on the Board of Governors, he served as Chairperson of the Supreme Court Rules Committee, and served on the Wing II Committee. He is also a Life Fellow of the Kentucky Bar Foundation and served on its Board in 1998.
Shelby also served on the Board of Trustees for the University of the South from 2001 through 2003. He has served as a mentor for the Junior Achievement of the Bluegrass. He is an active member of Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral of Lexington where he has served as Senior Warden, Vestry member, and Chancellor. Shelby is AV rated by the Martindale-Hubbell.
